Description
Prominent in the lateral neck, the jugular trunk is traced as a major lymphatic collecting vessel ascending deep to the sternocleidomastoid and paralleling the internal jugular vein within the carotid sheath region. Along its course, superficial and deep cervical lymphatic channels converge on the trunk from the face and scalp, and it approaches the venous angle at the junction of the internal jugular and subclavian veins. The common carotid artery lies medial to the internal jugular vein, while branches and tributaries in the anterior triangle provide familiar landmarks for orientation. Relationships are shown in situ against the cervical vertebrae and adjacent strap and suprahyoid musculature. Clear planes. Anatomically, the jugular trunk is the terminal outflow pathway for deep cervical nodes, so its proximity to the internal jugular vein makes it relevant during central venous access, neck dissection, and exposure of the carotid sheath. Ligation or disruption can produce postoperative lymph leak in the lower neck, and its termination differs by side, often joining the thoracic duct on the left and draining to the right lymphatic duct or directly to the venous angle on the right. This view also supports teaching of nodal basins, since metastatic spread from oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, and thyroid commonly tracks through deep cervical chains toward the jugular trunk. Faculty can drop this plate into gross anatomy head and neck labs, surgical anatomy modules, and oncology teaching sets addressing cervical lymphadenectomy and lymphatic drainage patterns.
