Description
Seen in lateral profile on the right side of an adult male neck, the jugular trunk ascends as a collecting lymphatic channel in the deep cervical region, running in close association with the internal jugular vein within the carotid sheath. Superficial landmarks include the sternocleidomastoid muscle draped anterolaterally, with deeper planes suggesting the anterior scalene and the prevertebral fascia posteriorly. Inferiorly, the jugular trunk tracks toward the thoracic inlet, where it typically terminates at the right lymphatic duct or at the venous angle formed by the internal jugular and subclavian veins. Small but consequential anatomy. This lateral orientation matters because it mirrors the corridor used for central venous catheterization and open or endoscopic neck dissection, where the internal jugular vein is a constant reference and nearby lymphatic channels are easily overlooked. Injury to the jugular lymphatic trunk or its terminal arch can produce a postoperative lymph leak, and on the right side this may present as chylous drainage less often than on the left but still demands prompt recognition and ligation. The relationship to the cervical plexus and its superficial branches also frames why sensory changes can follow dissection along the posterior border of sternocleidomastoid. Use it to teach lymphatic drainage of the head and neck in gross anatomy, ENT, or surgical anatomy courses, and to illustrate operative reports, atlas plates, and journal figures addressing jugular chain pathology, nodal metastasis, or thoracic inlet complications. It also fits radiology teaching files as a schematic companion when correlating ultrasound-guided internal jugular access with deep cervical lymphatic anatomy.
