Description

Anterior surface anatomy of the female breast is rendered with a semi-transparent integument to reveal the mammary gland (glandula mammaria) embedded within subcutaneous adipose tissue. Lactiferous ducts radiate from glandular lobules in the peripheral breast toward the centrally positioned nipple (papilla mammae), where they converge beneath the areola. Posteriorly, the glandular tissue lies superficial to the pectoral fascia over pectoralis major, defining the retromammary space as the plane between breast and chest wall. Cooper ligaments (suspensory ligaments) are implied as fibrous septa tethering skin to deeper fascia. This anterior perspective matters because it maps the ductal-lobular system that gives rise to most breast carcinomas and clarifies how lesions track toward the nipple-areolar complex.
