Description

Prominently coursing across the lateral scalp and posterior neck, the occipital artery arises from the posterior aspect of the external carotid artery, then travels superiorly and posteriorly deep to the posterior belly of the digastric and the sternocleidomastoid before turning toward the occipital region. Along its route it relates closely to the mastoid process and the superior nuchal line, sending muscular branches to sternocleidomastoid and deeper suboccipital muscles while ascending to supply the posterior scalp. Superficial veins (including the internal jugular vein in the carotid sheath region and posterior scalp tributaries) are shown in blue, with adjacent yellow nerve pathways that logically include the greater occipital nerve accompanying the artery in the occipital scalp.
