Description
Arising from the posterior aspect of the external carotid artery, the occipital artery is traced in lateral profile as it passes deep to the posterior belly of the digastric and the mastoid region, then curves superiorly and posteriorly toward the occipital scalp. Along its course, the vessel relates closely to the sternocleidomastoid attachment at the mastoid process and travels toward the superior nuchal line over the occipital bone, with the auricle and external acoustic meatus providing an immediate lateral landmark. Superficial facial muscles such as the masseter and temporalis frame the anterior field, while the scalp circulation becomes more prominent posteriorly. A tortuous artery.
