Description
Seen from the lateral aspect of the male thigh, the lateral circumflex femoral artery arises from the profunda femoris artery (or occasionally the femoral artery) deep to the sartorius and rectus femoris, then courses laterally toward the anterior compartment. Its ascending branch runs superiorly toward the tensor fasciae latae and greater trochanter region, while the transverse branch sweeps laterally and posteriorly around the proximal femur, passing deep to the vastus lateralis. The femoral shaft anchors the composition centrally, with vastus lateralis dominating the lateral surface and biceps femoris defining the posterolateral contour. This perspective is the cleanest way to teach the relationship between the lateral circumflex femoral system and the quadriceps musculature, because the vessel’s branches track along surgical planes that are used in anterior and anterolateral approaches to the hip. Injury or ligation of the ascending branch can compromise blood supply to the femoral head and neck region via its anastomoses, a point that becomes practical during management of femoral neck fractures and hip arthroplasty. A frequent landmark. The transverse branch also contributes to the cruciate anastomosis, relevant when collateral flow develops in chronic femoral artery occlusive disease.
