Description
Running along the posterior aspect of the proximal thigh, the descending branch of the lateral femoral circumflex artery courses inferiorly from the profunda femoris system and tracks toward the lateral side of the femoral shaft. From this posterior perspective, its relationship to the femur is clear, with the vessel lying posterolateral to the diaphysis and continuing distally toward the lateral knee where it contributes to periarticular anastomoses. The pelvis and paired femora frame the vascular pathway superiorly, while the popliteal artery appears posterior to the knee and continues into the anterior tibial, posterior tibial, and fibular (peroneal) arteries in the leg. Veins accompany the arterial tree in parallel, shown less prominently. Posterior visualization of the descending branch matters when you need to teach or plan around the profunda femoris territory rather than the superficial femoral artery, because this vessel supplies large portions of the vastus lateralis and participates in collateral flow around the hip and knee. It is also a frequent pedicle in the anterolateral thigh (ALT) flap, where understanding its caliber and distal course helps explain flap reliability and the consequences of proximal thigh trauma or iatrogenic injury. Clear landmarks. The femur and popliteal fossa provide orientation that translates well to intraoperative positioning and angiographic correlation. Use this plate in lower-limb anatomy teaching to tie osteology to vascular pathways, or in surgical education materials covering ALT flap harvest, femoral fracture approaches, and knee collateral circulation.
