Description
Inferior brain anatomy is rendered from the basal aspect, with the olfactory bulbs and olfactory tracts (cranial nerve I) running posteriorly along the orbital surface of the frontal lobes toward the olfactory trigone and anterior perforated substance. Medial to this pathway, the optic nerves converge on the optic chiasm, then continue as optic tracts; posterior and inferior to the chiasm, the hypothalamic region blends into the midbrain. Arising from the ventral brainstem, additional cranial nerves course anterolaterally from the pons and medulla, their rootlets collecting into larger fascicles as they travel toward the skull base foramina. Clean topography. Olfactory axons are unusual: primary sensory neuron bundles traverse the cribriform plate to synapse in the olfactory bulb, and the tract then projects centrally without an intervening thalamic relay, a point that matters when teaching limbic system connections and the neurobiology of smell. This basal view also mirrors the clinical exam logic for anterior cranial fossa trauma, where shearing across the cribriform plate can produce anosmia and cerebrospinal fluid rhinorrhea, and it frames why olfactory groove meningiomas often present with progressive smell loss before visual complaints from optic apparatus compression. Surgical corridors to the anterior skull base depend on these relationships. Neuroanatomy courses and cranial nerve modules will use this plate to anchor CN I alongside the optic chiasm and ventral brainstem nerves, and to reinforce proximal to distal continuity from bulb to tract to central targets. It also fits well in neurosurgical and ENT education materials covering endoscopic endonasal approaches, olfactory preservation strategies, and patterns of basal cistern pathology on CT or MRI.
