Description

Arising along the lateral nasal wall, the posterior dilator naris is shown as a small slip of muscle coursing toward the alar cartilage and the rim of the nostril. In this lateral skull view, the muscle sits superficial to the cartilaginous framework of the nose and anterior to the nasal aperture, with the ala nasi positioned inferior and lateral to the nasal bone and frontal process of the maxilla. The orbit, zygomatic region, maxilla with dentition, mandible, and upper cervical vertebrae provide bony context for the nasal region. Small muscle, big effect. Functionally, the dilator naris contributes to alar flaring and regulation of the external nasal valve, a key choke point for airflow at the nostril margin.
