Description
Seen from the left lateral torso, the anterior abdominal wall is dominated by the rectus abdominis running vertically from the pubic crest and pubic symphysis toward the costal cartilages of ribs 5 to 7 and the xiphoid process. Its muscle belly sits medial to the lateral abdominal muscles, while the rectus sheath encloses it superficially and deep, formed by the aponeuroses of external oblique, internal oblique, and transversus abdominis as they sweep anteriorly from the flank. Superiorly, the lower rib cage and thoracic vertebrae frame the upper attachments; inferiorly, the iliac crest and pelvis establish the transition into the inguinal region. Clear bony reference points are included. A lateral perspective makes the architecture of the abdominal wall easier to teach than a straight anterior view because you can track how the external oblique fibers run inferomedially toward the linea alba while the rectus remains a longitudinal strap muscle in the paramedian column.
