Centered in the upper abdomen, the distal esophagus descends through the diaphragmatic esophageal hiatus to join the stomach at the gastroesophageal junction, with the cardia and fundus positioned superiorly beneath the left hemidiaphragm. The gastric body continues inferiorly to the antrum and pylorus, which turns to the right to meet the first part of the duodenum.
