Description
Rendered in an X-ray style lateral projection, the parietal bone is seen forming the superolateral cranial vault between the frontal bone anteriorly and the occipital bone posteriorly, with the squamous part of the temporal bone lying inferior to it. The coronal and lambdoid sutures trace the parietal margins, while the squamous suture runs inferolaterally toward the pterion region. Inferiorly, the mandibular body and ramus, maxilla with dentition, and the nasal cavity are outlined, and the upper cervical vertebrae stack beneath the occiput with their posterior elements visible through the transparent cranial base. A partial superior calvarial “window” exposes the inner cranial cavity and adjacent paranasal sinus spaces. Lateral skull views remain the workhorse for teaching and for clinical pattern recognition because they let you relate calvarial curvature to the cranial base and cervical alignment in a single frame. Fractures of the parietal bone commonly propagate along sutural lines, and the pterion area at the anteroinferior parietal is a thin junction where trauma can lacerate the middle meningeal artery, producing an epidural hematoma. That clinical relationship reads clearly when the cranial vault, temporal squama, and internal cranial space are shown together. Landmarks matter.
