Description
Facing the cerebrum from the anterior aspect, the bilateral frontal lobes dominate, with the superior, middle, and inferior frontal gyri curving laterally from the interhemispheric (longitudinal) fissure. Inferiorly, the orbital surfaces of the frontal cortex approach the anterior cranial fossa, while the frontal opercular region sits superior to the expected course of the lateral (Sylvian) fissure. Blue overlays mark the primary auditory cortex on each side, located on the superior temporal plane (Heschl gyri) within the temporal lobes, lateral and inferior to the frontal gyri. Below the cerebral hemispheres, the midbrain, pons, and medulla oblongata align in the midline, with the cerebellum partially visible posterior-inferior to the occipital poles. This anterior view helps learners reconcile surface landmarks with functional topography. The placement of primary auditory cortex on the temporal plane is easy to lose in lateral-only brain views, yet it underpins core clinical findings: bilateral lesions can cause cortical deafness, while unilateral temporal involvement often spares pure tone detection but disrupts speech perception when association areas are affected.
