Description
Viewed from a posterior and slightly superior perspective, the cerebral hemispheres are separated by the longitudinal fissure, with the highlighted gyrus postcentralis arching along the superolateral surface near the midline. The central sulcus forms its anterior boundary, while the postcentral sulcus lies posteriorly, placing this convolution squarely in the parietal lobe. Medially, the gyrus continues onto the paracentral lobule, where the representation of the contralateral lower limb sits close to the interhemispheric fissure. The cerebellar hemispheres and vermis appear inferior to the occipital poles, with the upper brainstem partially obscured beneath. Neuroanatomy teaching often struggles with one basic distinction: motor versus sensory cortex along the central sulcus. This angle makes the postcentral gyrus easy to localize for the primary somatosensory cortex (S1, Brodmann areas 3, 1, and 2) and helps clarify how the sensory homunculus drapes from the superomedial leg area down toward the lateral face and hand regions. Clinically, lesions involving the postcentral gyrus classically produce contralateral cortical sensory deficits, such as impaired two-point discrimination, graphesthesia, and stereognosis, and a posterior approach can be useful when discussing parasagittal meningiomas or anterior cerebral artery territory infarcts affecting the medial parietal cortex. Orientation matters. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and neuroscience courses when introducing sulcal landmarks, lobar boundaries, and functional localization around the central sulcus, and in neurology or neurosurgery teaching materials that correlate parietal lobe strokes with examination findings.
