Description
Anteriorly, the male pelvis frames the coxofemoral articulation with the femoral head seated medially within the acetabulum of the os coxae. Superior to the socket, the ilium flares laterally toward the iliac crest, while the pubis occupies the anteromedial pelvis and the ischium forms the inferoposterior contribution to the acetabular cup. The femoral neck projects proximally from the shaft toward the pelvis, placing the head deep to the acetabular rim and adjacent to the anterior column of the acetabulum. Bony congruence is the story here. Clinical teaching often benefits from an anterior perspective because it aligns with what you palpate and approach in practice, from the anterior superior iliac spine to the pubic symphysis and on to the proximal femur. This is the view that helps clarify why femoroacetabular impingement can be cam type at the femoral head neck junction or pincer type at the acetabular rim, and how each mechanism limits hip flexion and internal rotation before labral pathology develops. It also supports discussion of anterior hip dislocation patterns and of anterior approaches to total hip arthroplasty, where precise understanding of the acetabular orientation and femoral neck axis informs component positioning. Ideal for gross anatomy labs, orthopedic and sports medicine lectures, and figures in manuscripts addressing hip biomechanics, femoroacetabular impingement, acetabular fractures, or arthroplasty planning. Useful as a reference plate for radiology correlation when teaching the AP pelvis and cross sectional anatomy of the hip joint. Anatomical accuracy verified by SciePro's Medical Advisory Board.
