Centered on the anterior knee, the patella lies embedded within the quadriceps femoris tendon and sits anterior to the distal femoral condyles, with the patellar tendon descending inferiorly toward the tibial tuberosity on the proximal tibia. Medial and lateral to the patella, the joint lines correspond to the femorotibial articulations over the tibial plateau, while the rounded contours of the medial and lateral femoral condyles are appreciated deep to the soft tissues. Laterally, the proximal fibula is implied by surface contour distal and lateral to the joint, contrasting with the more medial tibial flare.
