Description
Lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes are organized along the body’s superficial and deep fascial planes, converging toward the major lymphatic trunks and ducts. Cervical, axillary, tracheobronchial, mesenteric, paraaortic (lumbar), iliac, and inguinal node groups are positioned along the great vessels, with collecting vessels running proximally from the limbs toward the torso. Superiorly, the thymus lies in the anterior superior mediastinum, while the spleen occupies the left upper quadrant, posterolateral to the stomach; in the face and upper neck, the parotid and major salivary glands appear as anatomic landmarks closely associated with intraparotid and pericervical nodal chains. Lymph returns to the venous angles at the junctions of the internal jugular and subclavian veins. Flow is implied, not shown. This whole-system organization matters when you need to predict pathways of infection and metastatic spread, or when planning biopsy and nodal dissection. A fixed, body-wide perspective helps you teach why breast carcinoma often involves axillary and internal mammary nodes, why melanoma of the lower limb maps to superficial and deep inguinal nodes, and why obstruction of the thoracic duct can present as chylothorax after left-sided neck or mediastinal surgery. Relationships to mediastinal structures and to the abdominal lymphatic basins also support discussion of lymphoma staging and patterns of lymphadenopathy on physical exam and cross-sectional imaging.
