Description
Shown from a lateral perspective in an adult male, the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve (lateral cutaneous nerve of the thigh) emerges from the lumbar plexus and courses across the iliacus toward the anterior superior iliac spine, then passes deep to, or through, the inguinal ligament near the sartorius origin. Distal to the ligament it divides into anterior and posterior branches that descend on the anterolateral thigh, superficial to the tensor fasciae latae and along the fascia lata, supplying skin sensation only. The femur, patella, tibia, fibula, and bones of the foot anchor the limb, while adjacent major trunks such as the sciatic nerve and its tibial and common fibular divisions provide posterior compartment and distal leg context. Purely sensory. This oblique pelvic-to-thigh course is the anatomic basis of meralgia paresthetica, where entrapment at the inguinal ligament or near the ASIS produces burning dysesthesia and numbness over the lateral thigh without motor weakness or reflex changes. Surgeons and proceduralists track this nerve to avoid iatrogenic injury during anterior approaches to the hip, iliac crest bone graft harvest, inguinal hernia repair, and laparoscopic port placement near the ASIS. The lateral view clarifies why small shifts in retractor placement or incision line at the groin can translate into a long strip of postoperative sensory disturbance.
