Description
Lateral dorsal nucleus (nucleus dorsalis lateralis thalami) occupies the superior aspect of the lateral thalamic group, positioned dorsally and slightly posterior within the diencephalon when viewed from the front. From this anterior perspective, its mass sits lateral to the mediodorsal nucleus and superior to the ventral tier (ventral anterior and ventral lateral nuclei), with the internal medullary lamina forming a medial boundary that helps separate nuclear territories. The superior pole approaches the thalamic surface near the stria medullaris thalami, while posteriorly it grades toward the lateral posterior nucleus and the pulvinar complex beyond the visible anterior contour. Boundaries matter here. Functionally, the lateral dorsal nucleus is classed with the limbic-associated thalamic nuclei, receiving inputs from hippocampal and retrosplenial/posterior cingulate networks and relaying toward cingulate cortex, so its anatomy belongs in the same teaching conversation as Papez circuit organization and spatial memory. Small paramedian or posterior choroidal territory infarcts can involve dorsal thalamic regions, producing prominent cognitive and behavioral findings (amnesia, disorientation, abulia) out of proportion to motor deficits, and a nucleus-level view helps explain that clinical mismatch. The fixed anterior orientation supports correlation with common atlas conventions and with axial MRI segmentation by letting you triangulate the nucleus relative to the internal medullary lamina and adjacent dorsal thalamic surfaces rather than relying on broad “lateral thalamus” labels.
