Description
Lateral dorsal nucleus (LD) occupies the anterosuperior portion of the lateral nuclear group in the thalamus, positioned on the dorsal aspect of the diencephalon near the thalamic surface that forms the floor of the lateral ventricle. Medially, LD lies adjacent to the internal medullary lamina and the mediodorsal (dorsomedial) nucleus, while posterior continuity relates toward the lateral posterior nucleus and the pulvinar region. Anteriorly, its border approaches the anterior thalamic nuclei across the Y-shaped internal medullary lamina, and laterally it abuts the thalamic reticular nucleus along the external medullary lamina. Small territory, precise neighbors. LD matters because it sits at the interface of limbic and associative thalamic circuitry, with strong connections to the cingulate gyrus and parahippocampal regions that are commonly taught alongside Papez-related pathways. Focal infarcts in the paramedian or thalamogeniculate arterial territories can spare primary sensory relay nuclei yet still produce disproportionate cognitive and affective findings, including disorientation, apathy, or memory disturbance when dorsal thalamic networks are involved.
