Description
Seen from the lateral aspect beneath the skin, the lateral head of the triceps brachii occupies the posterolateral compartment of the upper arm, with its pennate fibers converging distally toward the common triceps tendon. Superiorly, the muscle belly lies inferior to the posterior deltoid region, while anteriorly it is bounded by the lateral intermuscular septum and the lateral contour of the brachialis and brachioradialis as the arm approaches the elbow. The long head of triceps sits more medially and proximally, and the medial head becomes more apparent in the distal third as it contributes deep fibers to the tendon inserting on the olecranon of the ulna. Surface anatomy matters here.
