Layered skin is rendered in cross-section, with a superficial keratinized epidermis sitting anterior to a collagen and elastin rich dermis and a deeper hypodermis dominated by subcutaneous adipose tissue. Within the epidermis, the stratum corneum caps the viable keratinocyte layers, while the dermal papillae interdigitate with the rete ridges at the dermoepidermal junction. A terminal hair shaft emerges from a follicular infundibulum and continues inferiorly to the bulb, where it sits in the deep dermis or superficial subcutis, accompanied by a lobulated sebaceous gland draining into the follicle and a coiled eccrine sweat gland with its duct coursing superiorly toward the surface. Small arteries and veins arborize through the reticular dermis, and cutaneous nerve fibers track alongside them. Seeing these components in one cut is helpful when you need to explain barrier function and adnexal anatomy in the same frame. The relationship between the pilosebaceous unit and surrounding dermis is the anatomical basis for acne vulgaris, where follicular hyperkeratinization and sebum retention promote comedone formation and perifollicular inflammation. Depth matters too: partial-thickness burns spare dermal adnexa, allowing re-epithelialization from follicular and glandular epithelium, while full-thickness injury destroys these reservoirs and typically requires grafting.
