Description
Left lateral cardiac anatomy is presented with the left ventricle forming most of the obtuse (pulmonary) margin and the apex projecting inferolaterally, while the left atrium sits posterior and superior as the base of the heart. Superiorly, the ascending aorta rises from the left ventricular outflow tract and curves toward the arch, with the pulmonary trunk and left pulmonary artery positioned anterior to the left main bronchus. Along the epicardial surface, the coronary (atrioventricular) sulcus separates atrium from ventricle and the left coronary vessels track within the fat-filled grooves, with branches consistent with the circumflex artery and left marginal artery running toward the lateral wall. The adjacent left lung relationship is implied by the cardiac impression over the lingula. Clear spatial cues. This perspective matters when teaching why the left ventricle dominates the left cardiac border on examination and imaging, and why lateral wall ischemia maps to circumflex or obtuse marginal territory rather than the left anterior descending distribution. It also supports surgical orientation for left-sided approaches, including pericardiotomy and exposure of the left atrial appendage during atrial fibrillation procedures, where the phrenic nerve and pericardium lie laterally and demand careful planning. A practical landmark.
