Superior to the valve plane sits the left atrium, while the thick-walled left ventricle lies inferiorly, its endocardial surface showing trabeculation and the bases of papillary muscles that tether the leaflets via chordae tendineae. Medially, the mitral valve relates to the interventricular septum and the aortic root, while laterally it approaches the left ventricular free wall. Adjacent valve landmarks, including the tricuspid and aortic valves, help orient the four-chamber anatomy in this cut.
