Description
Centered within the thorax, the heart sits slightly left of the midline, with the ascending aorta emerging superiorly and curving into the aortic arch before continuing as the descending thoracic aorta. From the arch, the brachiocephalic trunk, left common carotid artery, and left subclavian artery course superiorly toward the neck and upper limb, while the internal thoracic arteries descend on the posterior surface of the anterior chest wall. Venous return is represented by the superior vena cava entering the right atrium superiorly, fed by the right and left brachiocephalic veins, with more peripheral superficial and deep veins running alongside major arterial pathways. Coronary arteries and cardiac veins are suggested on the epicardial surface. The layout reads as an anterior upper body overview. For teaching circulation, this composition makes the parallel organization of large arteries and veins immediately legible, and it keeps the aortic arch branches in clear relationship to the mediastinum. That matters clinically when explaining catheter paths from upper extremity access, central venous catheter tip position at the cavoatrial junction, or why aortic coarctation produces collateral flow through the internal thoracic and intercostal networks. The spatial separation of arterial outflow and venous return also supports rapid orientation when correlating to CT angiography or schematic hemodynamics.
