Description
Curving anteriorly from the thoracic vertebrae, the bony ribs form a lateral arc around the thorax while their anterior ends transition into costal cartilage highlighted as hyaline tissue. Posteriorly, each rib head approximates the bodies of adjacent thoracic vertebrae, and the rib neck and tubercle sit lateral to the transverse processes, with the intervertebral discs separating successive vertebral bodies. Anterolaterally, the costal cartilages extend from the osseous rib ends toward the midline, occupying the space where the sternum would normally articulate, even if the sternum itself lies out of frame.
