Description
Running along the lateral thoracic wall, the lateral cutaneous branches of the posterior intercostal veins emerge near the midaxillary line and course superficially over the ribs and intercostal spaces before converging back toward the deeper intercostal venous trunks. In anterior projection on a male torso, these blue vessels align segmentally with the costal framework, sitting lateral to the sternum and medial to the axillary region, with adjacent intercostal arteries shown in red for vascular contrast. Superiorly, their drainage is continuous with the azygos system via posterior intercostal veins, while inferior segments communicate with subcostal and lumbar channels toward the inferior vena cava. For teaching thoracic wall venous return, this view clarifies a point that is easy to lose in posterior-only diagrams: the intercostal veins are not confined to the paravertebral gutter, and their lateral branches form a clinically visible network on the chest wall. Prominent superficial intercostal and thoracoepigastric venous channels become relevant in superior vena cava obstruction, where collateral flow may dilate along the lateral thorax, and in portal hypertension, where chest and abdominal wall collaterals can enlarge and become symptomatic.
