Description
Framed by the anterior skull and mandible, the inferior labial artery is traced as a tortuous branch coursing within the lower lip, deep to the orbicularis oris and anterior to the mandibular incisors. It commonly arises from the facial artery near the angle of the mouth, then runs medially along the vermilion border region to anastomose with its contralateral partner across the midline. Lateral to its origin, the mental artery and mental foramen region provide a useful landmark for the arterial supply to the chin and lower lip. Small arterioles branch superiorly and inferiorly into the labial tissues. Tortuosity is the point. Arterial mapping of the lower lip matters when you need controlled hemostasis in a region with dense collateral flow and frequent midline crossover. During lower lip laceration repair, wedge excision, or vermilion advancement, an unrecognized inferior labial artery can retract and bleed briskly, and the same vessel forms the pedicle or risk zone for many mucosal and cutaneous flaps around the oral commissure. Dentists and maxillofacial surgeons also care about its relationship to the mental artery when planning local anesthesia, implant work, or vestibular incisions near the canine and premolar region. Plastic surgery texts, oral and maxillofacial surgery atlases, and head and neck anatomy curricula use this type of depiction to teach facial artery branching patterns and labial anastomoses, and it also supports patient education graphics on lip reconstruction and traumatic injury. It is equally appropriate for illustrating arterial sources of lower lip hematoma or postoperative bleeding in clinical handouts and journal figures.
