Description
Posterior thigh anatomy is presented with the long head of biceps femoris prominent along the lateral hamstring compartment, its fusiform belly lying superficial to the posterior femur and tracking from the ischial tuberosity toward the posterolateral knee. Medially, the semitendinosus and semimembranosus would be expected adjacent to it, with the biceps femoris forming the lateral border of the popliteal fossa as it approaches the knee. The illustration also includes the pelvis, femur, tibia, and fibula, orienting the muscle’s proximal origin on the ischium and its distal course toward the fibular head. Understanding the long head matters because it is the biarticular component of biceps femoris, spanning hip extension and knee flexion, and it is a frequent site of proximal hamstring strain in sprinting and kicking sports.
