Description
Running along the posterolateral thigh, the short head of biceps femoris lies deep and lateral to the long head, arising from the lateral lip of the linea aspera and the lateral supracondylar line of the femur. Distally, its muscle belly blends with the long head to form the biceps femoris tendon, which courses posterior to the lateral femoral condyle toward the fibular head. Anterior to this hamstring mass, vastus lateralis and the iliotibial tract define the lateral contour of the thigh, while gluteus maximus sits superiorly and the lateral gastrocnemius emerges inferiorly across the knee. Because the short head is the only hamstring component that does not cross the hip, this lateral perspective is useful for teaching compartmental anatomy and for clarifying knee-dominant flexor function in contrast to the hip-extending long head, semitendinosus, and semimembranosus. Clinically, its distal tendon and insertion at the fibular head sit close to the common fibular (peroneal) nerve as it wraps around the fibular neck, a relationship that becomes relevant during posterolateral corner injuries, lateral meniscus surgery, or fibular head fracture fixation. The femoral origin also helps explain why distal femoral shaft pathology or surgical exposure can irritate the biceps femoris short head and present as lateral posterior thigh pain. Ideal for musculoskeletal anatomy teaching in gross anatomy and kinesiology courses, and for illustrating lateral knee surgical approach discussions where biceps femoris, the fibular collateral ligament, and the fibular head serve as orientation points.
