Description
Posterior transparency frames the thorax around the paired lungs, with the vertebral column in the midline and the ribs curving laterally to form the costal cage. Each lung extends superiorly as an apex into the root of the neck, then expands inferiorly toward the diaphragmatic surface, while the trachea bifurcates at the carina into right and left main bronchi that branch into lobar and segmental bronchi, then finer bronchioles toward the peripheral alveoli. Centrally, the heart sits slightly left of midline within the mediastinum, its great vessels rising superiorly between the lungs near the hila. A back-facing, x-ray style rendering like this makes the bronchial tree easier to follow without the usual anterior overlap from the sternum and costal cartilages. That matters when teaching why aspirated material more often enters the right bronchial system, given the more vertical course of the right main bronchus, and when correlating lobar or segmental atelectasis with the downstream airway that is obstructed by mucus plugging. Clear relationships to the ribs and thoracic spine also support interpretation of chest radiographs and CT scout views, where posterior structures set key landmarks.
