Description
Anterior thoracic anatomy is rendered with partial body transparency to localize both lungs within the pleural cavities and against the mediastinum. Superiorly, the trachea descends in the midline and bifurcates at the carina into right and left main bronchi, which branch into lobar bronchi and smaller bronchioles within the lung parenchyma. On the right, the horizontal fissure separates the superior and middle lobes, while the oblique fissures on both sides run inferoanteriorly to demarcate the inferior lobes; the cardiac notch and lingula contour the anteromedial left lung adjacent to the heart. Inferior lung margins approach the diaphragm, which also forms the superior boundary of the upper abdominal viscera shown beneath. Obesity changes the mechanics that this layout invites you to teach: reduced chest wall compliance and cranial displacement of the diaphragm can lower functional residual capacity and promote basal atelectasis, which is clinically apparent in perioperative and supine patients. Clear depiction of the fissures matters when you correlate lobar disease distribution on radiography or CT, or when you explain why a right middle lobe process can be subtle on a frontal chest film but apparent on the lateral view. Fissural anatomy also guides surgical planning for lobectomy and helps frame bronchoscopic navigation by linking bronchiole territories to lobar boundaries. Good landmarks. For teaching, this composition works well in gross anatomy, respiratory physiology, and pathophysiology modules that need organ position context rather than an isolated lung specimen, and it supports figures in bariatric medicine, anesthesia, and pulmonary texts discussing obesity-related hypoventilation and postoperative pulmonary complications.
