Description
Seen in lateral profile, the seventh ribs (costae VII) arc anteroinferiorly from the thoracic vertebral column, articulating posteriorly at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints around T7 before sweeping toward the anterior thoracic wall. Each rib’s head, neck, and tubercle sit posterior and slightly superior to the long shaft, while the costal groove tracks along the inferior internal border where the intercostal neurovascular bundle would course. Anteriorly, the osseous rib transitions to costal cartilage that continues medially toward the sternum, placing rib 7 at the junction between the body of the sternum and the xiphoid region. Rib 7 is a practical landmark because it marks the inferior margin of the central rib cage and helps define the lower extent of the lung and pleural reflections during surface anatomy and procedural planning. A lateral view clarifies how the thoracic cage couples to segmental thoracic motion at T7, and why fractures at the lateral angle can cause focal pain with respiration while remaining close to the intercostal vessels and nerve in the costal groove. It also reinforces the distinction between true ribs and the lower false ribs, with costal cartilage continuity at rib 7 shaping the costal margin and the infrasternal angle near the xiphoid.
