Description
Presented in a lateral projection of the male thorax, the seventh rib is singled out in color against adjacent ribs, allowing clear identification of its shaft, costal angle, and anterior costal cartilage as it slopes inferiorly toward the sternum. Posteriorly, the bony rib arises from the thoracic vertebral column at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints, then sweeps anterolaterally to form the mid-axillary contour of the chest wall. Inferior and superior neighbors (ribs 6 and 8) frame the intercostal space, while thoracic kyphosis transitions toward lumbar lordosis along the visible vertebral segments. Orientation is clean. Clinically, the seventh rib is a reliable landmark for localizing the seventh intercostal space and the inferior border of the scapula region during thoracostomy planning and chest wall trauma assessment.
