Description
Seen in lateral profile, the right and left ninth ribs (costae IX) arc anteroinferiorly from their posterior articulations with the thoracic vertebrae toward the anterior thoracic wall, where their costal cartilages join the costal margin rather than the sternum. Posteriorly, each rib meets the vertebral column at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints, with the rib neck and tubercle lying immediately lateral to the transverse processes. The thoracic kyphosis places the posterior rib angles slightly more posterior than the midaxillary shaft. One rib is color-highlighted to isolate the ninth level against adjacent eighth and tenth ribs. Level identification at the ninth rib matters because it sits at the transition between true and false ribs, and its cartilage contribution to the common costal margin can confuse surface landmarking in trauma and interventional work.
