Description
Running in an oblique lateral projection, the ninth ribs (costa IX) arc anteroinferiorly from the ninth thoracic vertebra toward the anterior thoracic wall, with the rib head and neck seated against the vertebral body and transverse process at the costovertebral and costotransverse joints. Posteriorly, the rib angle lies just lateral to the spinous processes, and the shaft continues anteriorly to the costal cartilage, marking the transition from osseous rib to resilient cartilage near the costochondral junction. Adjacent thoracic vertebrae with intervertebral discs remain in view, and the thoracolumbar junction is suggested inferiorly where rib-bearing vertebrae give way to the lumbar region. Blue emphasis on selected ribs draws attention to level-specific anatomy. Level nine matters because it sits at the boundary between “true” and “false” ribs, and its cartilage typically joins the costal margin rather than the sternum, a relationship that can confuse learners when surface landmarks are taught too simplistically.
