Description
Seen from the lateral aspect of the male knee, the popliteal artery descends from the distal femur into the popliteal fossa, running posterior to the knee joint and close to the posterior surface of the proximal tibia. A paired popliteal vein courses adjacent to the artery, typically positioned slightly more superficial, with smaller arterial branches and arterioles tracking toward the genicular region. Anterior to the neurovascular plane, the patella sits on the front of the joint while the femoral condyles articulate with the tibial plateau, and a crescentic meniscus is visible interposed between them. Lateral orientation matters because it clarifies how protected and how constrained this vessel is as it passes behind the knee, where flexion can accentuate compression against the joint capsule and posterior tibia. Popliteal artery entrapment syndrome, often related to an anomalous course relative to the medial head of gastrocnemius or popliteus, is easier to teach when you can relate the artery’s path to the bony contour and joint line. Trauma has its own logic here: posterior knee dislocation can injure the popliteal artery by tethering it proximally at the adductor hiatus and distally at the soleal arch, even when skin findings look modest.
