Description
Arising from the popliteal artery in the posterior knee, the superior lateral genicular artery courses laterally and superiorly along the distal femur, hugging the region of the lateral femoral condyle before contributing to the genicular arterial anastomosis. The distal femur sits superior to the tibial plateau, with articular cartilage capping both joint surfaces, and the vessel tracks posterior to these osseous landmarks before sweeping toward the lateral aspect of the joint. A companion vein may parallel the arterial segment, consistent with the venous comitantes of the genicular system. Clear relationships. Posterior visualization of this branch matters because it is one of the first named genicular vessels encountered when tracing the popliteal trunk around the femoral condyles, and its caliber and course become relevant during lateral approaches to the distal femur and knee. In total knee arthroplasty, synovectomy, and fracture fixation near the lateral femoral condyle, injury to the superior lateral genicular artery can contribute to troublesome bleeding and may compromise periarticular perfusion, particularly when other genicular branches have been sacrificed or thrombosed. For flap planning and postoperative wound concerns, its participation in the peri-patellar and peri-condylar plexus is a practical teaching point. Ideal use includes gross anatomy teaching on the popliteal fossa and genicular anastomosis, surgical atlases covering posterior knee exposure, and radiology education when correlating this course with contrast angiography or CTA/MRA of the knee vasculature in trauma or peripheral arterial disease.
