Description
Running along the medial thigh, the gracilis is seen from a posterior full body perspective as a slender, strap-like muscle spanning from the inferior pubic ramus to the proximal medial tibia at the pes anserinus. Superiorly it lies medial to the adductor longus and adductor magnus region of the femoral compartment, while distally its tendon courses posterior to the medial femoral condyle before turning anteromedially toward the tibia. From behind, the muscle belly sits superficial to deeper adductors and forms a clean medial border to the posterior thigh contour. Orientation stays clear across the full body field, with the thigh segment as the anatomical focus. For teaching, this posterior view clarifies how gracilis bridges the hip and knee, acting as a weak hip adductor and knee flexor with a medial rotational component when the knee is flexed. Surgeons also track it as a dependable flap donor: the proximally based gracilis myocutaneous flap, supplied mainly by the medial circumflex femoral artery branch (dominant pedicle), is commonly rotated for perineal and groin reconstruction, and the long distal tendon is harvested in some ACL and MCL reconstructions alongside other pes anserinus tendons.
