Description
Running deep to the gastrocnemius, the soleus occupies the posterior compartment of the leg, its broad muscular belly arising from the proximal tibia and fibula and narrowing inferiorly into the calcaneal (Achilles) tendon. A horseshoe-shaped superior margin frames the proximal calf where the gastrocnemius heads would lie superficially, while the muscle fibers sweep distally toward the posterior calcaneus. Proximally, the posterior thigh and hip musculature is included for orientation, with gluteal and hamstring contours leading into the popliteal region and down to the triceps surae complex.
