Description
Running along the posterior abdominal wall, the renal ganglion is shown as a sympathetic autonomic node positioned medial to the kidney and closely related to the renal artery as it approaches the hilum. Yellow postganglionic fibers course laterally from the ganglion to the renal plexus, then track along the arterial adventitia toward segmental branches within the renal sinus. Red and blue vascular channels provide the key landmarks, with the renal artery lying anterior to the renal pelvis at the hilum and the renal vein typically occupying the most anterior plane. Small but telling anatomy. Sympathetic input from the renal ganglion modulates renal vascular tone, renin release from the juxtaglomerular apparatus, and tubular sodium handling, so its anatomic relationship to the renal vessels is not academic trivia. This posterior perspective maps directly onto the corridor used in retroperitoneal exposures of the renal hilum and is a useful mental model when discussing iatrogenic injury or postoperative neuropathic pain after flank and retroperitoneal procedures. It also supports teaching around renal denervation, where ablation targets periarterial sympathetic fibers rather than the kidney parenchyma itself.
