Description
Arising from the deep palmar arch, the second palmar metacarpal artery runs distally in the second intermetacarpal space, closely applied to the palmar surfaces of the second and third metacarpals and deep to the flexor tendons. From an anterior (palmar) perspective, the vessel sits centrally within the deep palm, with the metacarpal shafts superficial to the interosseous compartment and the digital rays fanning distally toward the proximal, middle, and distal phalanges. Blue superficial and deep veins accompany the arterial course and communicate across the palm, while the carpal bones form the proximal bony foundation at the wrist. Deep territory. Clinically, this artery matters because it contributes directly to the common palmar digital arteries and the perfusion of the index and middle finger rays, territories frequently assessed when evaluating traumatic lacerations in the palm or compromised flow after crush injuries.
