Description
Running along the radial (lateral) margin of the index finger, the radialis indicis artery is traced from its origin in the deep palmar circulation toward the distal phalanx in an anterior (palmar) view of the male hand. Proximal to the digit, the distal radius and ulna frame the carpus, with the metacarpals and phalanges aligned distally, while the highlighted arterial tree courses superficial to the metacarpals and into the digital neurovascular bundles. Companion veins parallel the arterial channels, forming a palmar venous network that returns blood proximally toward the wrist. Landmarks stay readable. Clinically, this vessel matters because it commonly arises from the radial artery via the deep palmar arch and forms a key component of the index finger’s blood supply alongside the princeps pollicis artery, a relationship surgeons reference during thenar and first web space approaches. Injury or spasm of the radialis indicis can complicate lacerations along the radial border of the index finger, and its caliber and course are relevant when evaluating digital ischemia after traumatic crush, tight dressings, or inadvertent intra-arterial injection. For microsurgical planning, the illustration clarifies why the index finger may remain perfused despite proximal compromise when collateral flow through the superficial palmar arch and common palmar digital arteries is intact.
