Description
Centered in the abdominal cavity, the small intestine is rendered as a coiled visceral mass extending from the pyloric region into the pelvis, with the duodenum beginning superiorly and to the right before crossing toward the left to transition into jejunum. Jejunal loops occupy much of the central and left abdomen, while the ileum trends inferiorly toward the right lower quadrant where it approaches the ileocecal region. A translucent, x-ray style skeleton frames the anatomy, with the rib cage superiorly, the lumbar vertebrae in the midline posterior to the bowel, and the pelvic ring inferiorly. Anterior orientation matters for teaching surface anatomy and for correlating bowel position with common clinical presentations. The right lower quadrant concentration of distal ileum supports discussions of Crohn disease and terminal ileitis, and it maps directly to sites assessed in suspected appendicitis versus ileal pathology on physical exam and cross-sectional imaging. Radiology trainees also use this spatial arrangement to anticipate where jejunal versus ileal loops fall when reviewing abdominal radiographs, CT scout views, or fluoroscopic small-bowel follow-through.
