Description

Centered within a midsagittal section of the male head and neck, the sphenoid bone is isolated in color against adjacent cranial base structures, with the body of the sphenoid forming the posterior roof of the nasal cavity and the floor of the middle cranial fossa. Superiorly, the sella turcica and hypophyseal fossa sit just inferior to the expected position of the optic chiasm, while posteriorly the clivus would descend toward the foramen magnum and upper cervical spine. Anterior and inferior extensions toward the pterygoid process are implied, projecting toward the posterior maxilla and the nasopharyngeal region, with the mandible, dentition, and zygomatic arch visible laterally in the model context. Cervical vertebrae C1 through C7 align inferiorly beneath the occipital base. Clean bony landmarks. For teaching and clinical correlation, this sagittal relationship is the one surgeons and radiologists use to orient the transsphenoidal route to the pituitary gland, where the sphenoid sinus (anterior to the sella) becomes the operative corridor and the sellar floor is the key bony landmark for entry.
