Description
Anteriorly, the lower cervical region is opened to orient the subclavian plexus against familiar bony landmarks, including the clavicles, manubrium of the sternum, first ribs, and the superior thoracic aperture. Yellow sympathetic fibers converge around the proximal subclavian artery at the root of the neck, just lateral to the trachea and esophagus and superior to the apical pleura. Superiorly, the plexus relates to the cervical sympathetic trunk and its ganglia, while laterally it sits deep to the clavicle on a line toward the axilla and the proximal humerus. Cranial nerves exiting the skull and cervical spinal nerve roots provide a proximal-to-distal map from the skull base to the shoulder girdle. Clinically, this view matters because the subclavian plexus represents the periarterial sympathetic network that distributes vasomotor, sudomotor, and pilomotor fibers to the upper limb via the subclavian and axillary vessels. It is the anatomy behind stellate ganglion block and other cervical sympathetic interventions used for complex regional pain syndrome, refractory upper extremity ischemic pain, and some sympathetically mediated neuropathic syndromes, where needle trajectory and local anesthetic spread must be judged against the clavicle, transverse processes, and the pleural dome. Small target. Real consequences. Use this illustration in gross anatomy and neuroanatomy teaching to distinguish the sympathetic chain, cervical ganglia, and periarterial plexuses from the brachial plexus proper, and in anesthesia or pain-medicine publications discussing cervical sympathetic blockade, complication avoidance (pneumothorax, vascular puncture), and expected distribution of sympathectomy effects in the upper limb.
