Description
Superior margin (margo superior) of a single cerebral hemisphere is presented from a posterior perspective as it arcs laterally and inferiorly toward the occipital pole. Along this convex border, the superolateral surface transitions toward the medial surface at the interhemispheric (longitudinal) fissure, with the parietal lobe giving way to the occipital lobe posteriorly. The occipital pole forms the most posterior contour, while the superior border remains the dominant silhouette against the posterior aspect of the hemisphere. Spatial orientation is unambiguous. Attention to the superior margin matters because it is a practical surface landmark for understanding how the cerebral hemispheres roof the cranial cavity and relate to midline dural venous structures, particularly the superior sagittal sinus along the falx cerebri. In posterior craniotomy planning, surgeons often triangulate the occipital pole and superior convexity to avoid parasagittal bridging veins and to anticipate the proximity of the calcarine cortex (primary visual cortex) on the medial occipital lobe, a region where hemorrhage or retraction can translate into homonymous visual field deficits.
