Description
Arcing along the anterior upper thoracic wall, the superior thoracic vein courses deep to the pectoralis major and near the inferior border of the clavicle before draining toward the axillary vein at the level of the axilla. Superficial to this venous pathway, the deltoid caps the lateral shoulder, while the biceps brachii lies anterior in the arm, framing the proximal humerus and the glenohumeral joint formed by the humeral head and the glenoid of the scapula. Medially, pectoralis major spans from the sternocostal region toward its humeral insertion, creating a muscular roof over the smaller thoracic wall vessels. Bone landmarks such as the clavicle and the proximal humerus orient the vessel’s superior and lateral relationships. Clinical teaching often glosses over the superior thoracic vein, yet it sits in the same operative and access corridor as the axillary vein and the cephalic vein as they converge near the deltopectoral groove. That matters during axillary dissection, pacemaker or port placement, and trauma evaluation of the shoulder girdle, where small tributaries can be torn and produce persistent venous oozing that is hard to control in a confined space. Catheter and guidewire paths make more sense when you can visualize how venous channels track around pectoralis major and toward the axilla. Small vessel, real consequences.
