Oriented from an inferior perspective, the fifth thoracic vertebra (T5) is presented with the vertebral body positioned anteriorly and the vertebral arch forming a posterior ring around the vertebral foramen. Posterior to the body, the pedicles transition into the laminae, which converge at the base of the spinous process; from this angle the spinous process projects posteriorly and slightly inferiorly, consistent with mid-thoracic morphology. Laterally, the transverse processes extend to either side, while the inferior articular processes and their inferior articular facets are prominent on the posteroinferior margin of the arch, facing anteriorly to articulate with the superior articular facets of T6. Clean bony landmarks. For teaching thoracic zygapophysial (facet) joint orientation, few views are as direct as looking up at the inferior articular facets, because you can appreciate how their coronal-plane bias in the thoracic spine limits flexion and extension while permitting axial rotation. Clinically, this anatomy is relevant when localizing pain generators in suspected thoracic facet arthropathy and when planning a medial branch block or radiofrequency ablation, where segmental level and joint line orientation guide fluoroscopic positioning. The inferior view also helps clarify why thoracic facet joints resist anterior translation compared with the lumbar region. Suitable for gross anatomy and spine biomechanics lectures, orthopaedic and neurosurgical teaching files, and medical publishing layouts that need an isolated T5 vertebra with clearly readable articular surfaces and posterior element landmarks.
