Description
Running down the anterolateral surface of the tibia, the tibialis anterior forms a broad proximal belly that narrows distally into a tendon as it approaches the ankle. Medial to it sits the sharp anterior border of the tibia (shin), while the fibula lies lateral and slightly posterior, defining the lateral contour of the leg. Superiorly, the distal femur and knee region frame the origin area near the lateral tibial condyle and adjacent interosseous membrane, with both lower legs presented in symmetric anterior alignment. Red highlighting isolates the tibialis anterior against the underlying tibia and fibula for clear compartmental orientation. Clinically, this anterior view is the one you want when teaching dorsiflexion mechanics and the gait consequences of tibialis anterior weakness. Foot drop from a common fibular (peroneal) nerve palsy produces a steppage gait, and the tibialis anterior is the key dorsiflexor you test during resisted ankle dorsiflexion and toe extension screening. Palpation is straightforward in this projection: the muscle stands out just lateral to the tibial crest, and its tendon becomes visible as it crosses the anterior ankle toward its insertions on the medial cuneiform and base of the first metatarsal.
